Swain County’s Department of Social Services has an opening for an Income Maintenance Caseworker – Medicaid: The primary responsibility of this position is to determine/re-determine eligibility for Medicaid as an Income Maintenance worker. Employees must explain Medicaid programs and benefits options and refer clients to other programs and services that could meet there needs as appropriate. Work is performed and supervised with an Income Maintenance Supervisor. Training is provided.  The normal work schedule includes Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM.

An additional expectation and requirement of this job may include but not limited to Disaster relief Duty if needed.  Up to $32,903 salary and a bonus up to $1,500 every six months.

Swain County’s Department of Social Services has an opening for a Social Worker Trainee:  The primary purpose of this position is to learn, train, and gain qualifying experience in the local government operations of the North Carolina Child Welfare system to become fully qualified for appointment to a permanent position as a Social Worker. Performs related duties as required.

This social worker will also perform backup coverage (a couple days a month) for On-Call duties during after- hours and weekends when the agency is closed. An additional expectation and requirement of this job includes Disaster Duty and overtime work (before 8:30am and after 5:00pm) as needed to meet the needs of the families and Agency.

Graduation from an accredited four-year degree granting college or university required.    Starting pay $43,000 plus up to $1,500 bonus every six months.

Swain County has an opening for a Paramedic with EMS. Full time position with benefits. Must possess a North Carolina Paramedic Certificate.  Under general supervision, performs emergency response work involving providing emergency medical care to victims of trauma, medical, and other emergencies in an unsupervised, pre-hospital environment. Work also involves responding to emergency medical calls, performing extrication and life rescue, and providing advanced life support to sick/injured persons. Work also involves preparing patient charts, completing records, and providing education to the public.

Work involves receiving all incoming calls on emergency 911 lines and dispatching applicable personnel. This will involve dispatching units or representatives from fire departments, rescue squads, police departments, the Sheriff’s Department, Highway Patrol, wildlife services, animal control, etc. Must be able to work different shifts. Must be 18 years of age or older. This position will be full time with benefits, starting at $28,804 with an increase in six months and chance for advancement.

Medical Insurance – Swain County offers employees a choice of High Deductible or PPO plans

Dental Insurance – Dental insurance is available to all full time employees and family members.

Life Insurance – Full-Time employees are covered with $10,000 of Life Insurance and dependents with $5,000 at no cost to employees. Additional term life insurance is available if the employee elects coverage.

Retirement – Membership with the North Carolina Local Governmental System is administered by the state. Participation is required. Employees contribute 6% of gross and the County matches an amount set by the state each year.

Health Insurance for Retirees – Employees who meet requirements can remain on the County Health Insurance after retirement until they reach age 65.

Computer Program – Employees with Swain County can buy a computer up to $2,000 with an interest free loan.

PrePaid Legal Services – Employees may enroll to receive PrePaid Legal Services if they wish.

Employee Assistance Program –   A program providing counseling and referral assistance in dealing with personal problems ranging from drug or alcohol dependency, to marital or financial problems, to work-related stress. Services are available, at no cost, to eligible employees and their family members 24 hours a day.

Deferred Compensation Plans – Swain County offers 457 or 401(k) retirement plans.

Credit Union – Employees may become members of the State Employees’ Credit Union which offers a full range of savings/loan options.

Longevity Pay – Employees with three or more years of eligible service will receive an annual payment in a lump sum based on years of service and percentages.
