Swain County Employee Benefits
Medical Insurance – Swain County offers employees a choice of medical plans with National Benefit Administrators.
- Plan 7240 – 80/20 plan
- Plan 7241 – 90/10 plan
Dental Insurance – Dental insurance in available to all full time employees. The employee pays half of the cost and the county pays the other, even for family members.
Life Insurance – Full-Time employees are covered with $10,000 of Life Insurance and dependents with $5,000 at no cost to employee. Additional term life insurance is available if the employee elects coverage.
Retirement – Membership with the North Carolina Local Governmental System is administered by the state. Participation is required after six months of employment. Employee contributes 6% of gross and the County matches an amount set by the state each year. The county has elected disability and life plans through the retirement system.
Health Insurance for Retirees – Employees who meet requirements can remain on the County Health Insurance after retirement until they reach age 65.
Supplemental Insurance Options – Both Colonial and Aflac offer several different types of insurance such as accident, cancer, hospital, etc. Premiums are payroll deducted and most are pretax.
Homeowners and Automobile Insurance – Polices are offered through Liberty Mutual. By being in this program employees receive discounts that otherwise they would not. Premiums can be payroll deducted out of each check throughout the year.
Flexible Benefits Plan – Eligible Child Care Expenses and Non-Reimbursed Medical Expenses can be taken out of your check pretax, which reduces your end of year taxable income.
Computer Program – Once you have been employed for one year with Swain County you can buy a computer up to $2,000 with an interest free loan. Your payments can be payroll deducted. |

PrePaid Legal Services – Employees may enroll to receive PrePaid Legal Services if they wish.
Employee Assistance Program – A program providing counseling and referral assistance in dealing with personal problems ranging from drug or alcohol dependency, to marital or financial problems, to work-related stress. Services are available, at no cost, to eligible employees and their family members 24 hours a day.
Deferred Compensation Plans – Swain County offers two different plans:
- A 457 Plan administered by Nationwide Retirement Solutions
- A 401(k) Plan administered by Prudential Retirement – The county contributes 5% for law enforcement officers as required by state
Credit Union – Employees may become members of the State Employees’ Credit Union which offers a full range of savings/loan options.
Direct Deposit – Employees can have Direct Deposit with the bank of their choice
Longevity Pay – Employees with ten or more years of eligible service will receive an annual payment in a lump sum based on years of service and percentages.
National College Savings Plan – 529 Plan – Employees can set aside money for children, grandchildren, or any child that they select to attend college. You can use the money at almost any college, anywhere in the country to pay for qualified higher education expenses – such as tuition, fees, room and board, and books.
Property Tax Payroll Deducted – Employees can set up payroll deductions for property tax
