EMERGENCIES - DIAL 911

Swain County 911 Addressing and Mapping

911 Addressing

Our purpose is to provide a system of addressing for all residences and businesses throughout the county.

Numerical addresses will be assigned when the driveway has been established.  The numerical street addresses are assigned according to the distance the driveway is located along a certain road.  We do not assign 911 numbers to vacant land.  To request a 911 number you may contact our office at 828-488-6021.

It is requested that developer(s) provide a list of road names to this department for approval. They can be submitted by fax, mail, or in person.

CAD and Mapping System

Swain County 911 utilizes an Interact Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD).  This program acts as both a records keeping and address/directions database.  It allows dispatchers to find a callers address, give responders information about the location and record activities of the responders.  The system is also used to keep track of the availability of law enforcement, fire, EMS, and rescue units.

The CAD system works in conjunction with the Interact Geo911 Mapping System.  This system displays a map of the entire county; including roads, residences, businesses, lakes, rivers, railways and county or jurisdictional boundaries.  This allows dispatchers to closely pinpoint the location of a caller and further assist with informing responders of that location.
